Central City / Black Hawk, Colorado

This Colorado gold rush town of old (is now a tourist Mecca with limited stakes Vegas style gaming. Their web site is www.centralcitycolorado.com) is where I decided to start my off-road vacation. The Columbine Campground (national forest service) just  outside of town is a great place to camp for tent or RV. Our Airstream was right at home in this beautiful Colorado forest. This was a great place for a flatlander like me to start my ATV, dirt bike and off-roading as their were plenty of easy ATV and dirt bike trails and dirt roads to ride before tackling the more advanced trails. It is also rich with history and gorgeous scenery. Dual sport and ATV riding is awesome here.

Camp to Rollins Pass Road

Below is a easy starter dual sport ride from camp to the Rollins Pass Rd and all the way up to needles eye where the road is closed due to a tunnel safety issue. The trip is 25 miles one way approx 2 hours. Click for Rollins Pass History  and my Pics to the right. Great Jeep trail ride the entire route is Jeep and 4x4 accessible.

Camp to St Mary's Glacier

Below is what I would call an advanced ride on parts of the trail..... It is steep and very rocky is a few places. I do not believe it is quite expert, but a little tough if you don't ride rocks often. It is however a great dual sport or ATV ride for the afternoon. Aprox 25 miles and 2.5 hours. Not open for Jeeps though 48 inch ATV.
