Hatfield McCoy ATV Trails

Hatfield McCoy's-Trails Heaven

October 2008 and I just returned from my duty to ride every trail in the USA and report back to you. I started my trek this fall (2008) in southern West Virginia at the Hatfield McCoy Trail System. Hatfield McCoy has over six mountains to ride (I personally rode three of the systems and some connectors) and their are several trails we found in between the official Hatfield McCoy Trails. This is gorgeous country in the mountains of West (by God) Virginia.
John Denver said it best "Almost Heaven" .... We miss you John.

The first ATV trail I rode this fall was Indian Ridge, this is the most sourthern trail. Below is some pictures of the trail system, and I have provided a trail map and more on the right. I now have begun to video with my new helmet cam too. Personally I rate, for the most part Indian Ridge as very easy (too easy for more advanced ATV riders, but would be great for families with small children). However the trails you can ride from the Ashland area to Pinnacle Creek are awesome and they are called the ATV Outlaw Trails by the locals (click on Outlaw trails 1 PDF link (at right) and follow map to 16 just on the top of  Crumpler. The Outlaw trails start here at the Steps (big hill) and follow to Wagon Wheel Rd, then north....If you are scared to go down the steps, you can follow the side road....Off road vehicles are allowed on all streets in this area). There are many of them and I have provided maps and as usual I tracked everything with my Garmin and saved track logs of the entire area for you to download and use in your GPS. If you have a Garmin it is very easy to download these files and upload them in your compatable Garmin or other GPS. The tracks where I rode will show up right on your screen read more here.

Nestled amidst 1,800 acres of private, hardwood forest,  Ashland Resort is open and ready for your visit to their newly constructed campground whose accommodations include KOA Kamping Kabins, Kamping Kottages as well as spacious RV and tent sites.... I can tell you this place is the best! Their ATV resort is clean and very well maintained, super clean laundry, gorgeous big camp sites (not the small sites you generally think about with older KOA campgrounds). The folks here offer genuine southern hospitality (you know it is so nice and unexpected when people treat you so wonderful).  They have great always on free WI-FI that works! You can ride your ATV or dirt bike directly from your site to Indian Ridge, Outlaw Trails and Pinnacle Creek Trails.... I stayed their almost two weeks and I will go back again many more times..... I loved it, tell em Dan from offroadusatrails.com sent you.ATV trails TN

The above photos are Indian Ridge trail section leading from the trailhead right at the KOA.

Below I have included videos of Indian Ridge and Pinnacle Creek. I rode the Pinnacle Creek trail with my Honda XR400 Via Wagon Wheel Rd, look here Outlaw Trails 1 .  I also have a Garmin track log where I rode a gorgeous dual sport ride on my Suzuki DRZ400, you can download on the Garmin Track Log link. Pinnacle Creek is a beautiful and fun trail system.... Much better than Indian Ridge I think, and if you stay at the KOA you can ride the sixteen creek crossings on the way to Pinnacle via Wagon Wheel Rd. The only thing is you will need to ride a few miles on pavement from KOA to Crumpler.... No big deal and legal in that area, however there is no trail I could find to connect KOA to the Outlaw Trail system.... I think perhaps in the future there may be though going by what I heard from the locals.

The above photos are on the Outlaw ATV trails between Indian Ridge and Pinnacle Creek .... These photos do not do it justice.... This area rocks. The upper left is the famous Wagon Wheel ATV store on the main drag.... Some great trails steep and rocky are just behind it. In fact there are many trails along this main road that are excellent. Follow this road north from the Wagon Wheel and you will have sixteen ATV creek crossings (then this will lead you to Pinnacle Creek Hatfield McCoy trails), some of them are quite challenging. These were the best trails in the area.... South of Wagon Wheel a few miles and there is a local favorite hill climb called "The Steps" that is a blast.

Browning Forks Trail System

Just a little north of Pinnacle Creek on hwy 52 is the town of Gilbert, WV where the ATV trailhead to Browning Forks trail system is. This was the best of the Hatfield McCoy Trails that I rode by far. The system was larger and more challenging than Pinnacle or Indian Ridge. I have provided a trail map with trail difficulty ratings on all of the trails courtesy of Hatfield McCoy Trails Inc. My Garmin track logs cover just about every trail there (but not all). There is something for everyone if you are not an advanced rider, do not be worried. Plenty of ATV riding for all to enjoy, a great family getaway.

Twin Hollow Campground

This campground is where I stayed while riding the Browning Forks Trails. It is on top of the mountain with views for miles around in every direction. It is worth staying there just for the views, but they have an ATV trailhead right on the property.

There is one problem with this place though.... The road going up to the campground is steep with many switchbacks and covered with gravel..... I could not pull my heavy 30ft Airstream up the hill with my Chevy Duramax. I had plenty of power, but even with a locked rear end both wheels would spin in the gravel. If you have a lighter unit you may not have a problem.... If you are worried about it the owner will come down with his Mac Daddy Big Bertha truck and pull your RV up the hill (you can unhook at the ATV trailhead on the highway below and drive up).... It is worth the trouble, it is beautiful.... Look at the pics . Special bonus to staying at this campground on top of the mountain is the fact that your cell phone works up here.

The Helmet Cam below left is the one I use to record all the videos..... The video resolution is actually better than on the web where I have to compress to stream.
